With a literacy rate of 85.9 percent, Assam holds the fifth position in
the country, revealed data from a report on education released by the
National Statistical Office (NSO). 

In Assam, the gap among male and female literacy is of 8.9 rate points, with male literacy at 90.1% and female literacy at 81.2%.

Kerala has once again ranked as the most educated state in India with 96.2%, followed by 88.7% in the national capital Delhi, 87.6% in Uttarakhand, and 86.6% in Himachal Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh has ranked the worst among all states in India in terms of literacy rate with 66.4%, behind Rajasthan’s 69.7%, Bihar’s 70.9%, Telangana’s 72.8% and Uttar Pradesh’s 73%.

India’s average literacy rate is 77%. Hence, these states have recorded a lower literacy rate than the national average.

The data, which is for 2017-18 and for all aged 7 or more, showed that the popular idea of “developed states” can be misleading with regard to literacy.

In Kerala, the gap between male and female literacy rate is the lowest at 2.2%.

At the national level, the male-female literacy gap is recorded at 14.4% with male literacy is recorded at 84.7% and female literacy at 70.3%.
